Power-up Morning Cordyceps Tonic

The last few days I’ve been feeling under the weather. OK… let’s be honest. I have my period.

My period has the fun habit of giving me some debilitating cramps, often with a side of dizziness, a drop in blood pressure, and just general desire to sleep.

It’s been a hard and scary road to navigate this once per month, but I’ve made some headway on it. I now know that I’m not going to vomit. I know that sitting/laying down is my friend. I know to drink an electrolyte powder and get warm as soon as possible. But even with this adjustments, my period days land me way more fatigued than usual.

I turned to my pantry full of random powders and adaptogens and herbs to see what could help me out. I landed on cordyceps.

cordyceps tonic recipe

Cordyceps is a powerful medicinal mushroom that increases athletic stamina and energy. I include it here to improve my energy and cognitive function. I buy my cordyceps powder from Mountain Rose Herbs, because they’re fanatical about sourcing organic, traceable ingredients.

I mix the cordyceps in a base of homemade hemp milk (you could use store-bought if you prefer), because hemp seeds have a super healthy mix of omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids. I also include Brain Octane (or you could use your favorite MCT oil) for a boost of medium chained triglycerides (MCTs), which are fats that are processed quickly, more like carbs, meaning you get the energy you need faster.

A little banana and honey give you a delicious flavor, plus some carbs to get your body going.

I drink this tonic warm because I have a vata dosha, but you can choose to make this a cold drink as well during the hot summer months.

This drink is perfect for period time, for early mornings, and days when you have a big workout ahead.

Any other ladies experience the fatigue I do when that time of the month rolls around? How do you invest in self-care during those times?
