"the listener" I laughed when I recently learned "the listener"

I laughed when I recently learned that the name Samantha means "the listener". I feel like I spent much of my entire childhood doing just that. My big Italian family would sit for hours talking and talking about everything under the sun, and I spent time listening, soaking it all in, trying to make sense of the world. After we'd leave my Grandma's house, I'd often have follow-up questions for my mom. "Why did that person leave their job? What does that word mean?" I wanted to understand how the world works and why people do what they do.

And I see now how that desire to listen and make sense of people's actions led me directly to my work today as a coach and Āyurvedic Health Counselor. I think the most important part of my job is listening. Hearing what people are saying *and* hearing what is unsaid. Listening deeply - not to judge, critique, or offer advice - but to get to the core feelings and desires that are driving people's actions.

✨️I'm then able to reflect my clients' core feelings and desires back to them, helping illuminate what they're doing, why, and how they want to move forward.

At my core - I'm a listener. I have years of listening, studying modern psychology, and learning the wisdom of the Yogic and Vedic texts that illuminate human nature and motivation.

I can witness the complex ball of emotions and actions you're feeling and ask non-obvious and precise questions to help you untangle those emotions into actionable steps and a clear path forward.

I love humans. ❤️ And I feel blessed to be a witness to my clients' process of understanding, growing, and evolving.

Thank you for this opportunity to put my name to good use. 🙏🙏

The mental and the physical are intimately connect The mental and the physical are intimately connected - in fact they are one.

If you want to change your life, it requires an energy shift, which might also require a physical shift as well.

That's the power and potency of the Yoga practices: we change the flow of energy as well as a change in our physicality.

In each class I teach, I take a mental/emotional theme or contemplation and apply it onto the physical body. For example: what Yoga poses and breathing exercises act to cultivate self-acceptance and self-love? What does self-love look like in food form? Or in a tea blend? Or in a dinacharya (daily routine) practice?

That's exactly what we're doing in my upcoming Self-Love Yoga Series. 3, 30-minute practices to help repattern energy and find new ways of experiencing self-love in your body.

I'd love to have you join. Learn more at the link in bio or at spirocollective.com. I always have new series and workshops coming up.

And let me know what you think about this in the comments - does this resonate with you? Have you ever felt the difficulty of connecting brain and body?

"Don't just do something, stand there." - Martin G "Don't just do something, stand there." - Martin Gabel

We are very good do-ers. In fact, we do all day. But the constant do-ing can lead us to believe that we need to do something in order to be good, worthy, safe, or fun. And we are reinforced by society, again and again, that we should do more in order to be better.

There is another way, and it doesn't involve moving to a cave in the Himalayas. That way is to simply learn how to be, to pause, to rest between doing.

And this is indeed something that many of us need to teach ourselves, given that our most common ways of resting are not all that restful -- TV, scrolling, and screens. ((Which could be its whole own post...)).

In Yin and Restorative Yoga practices, we are invited to slow down, release resistance, and relax the muscles. With this extra time dedicated to breathing and being, we rejuvenate the nervous system and realize that we are good, worthy, safe, and fun....even if we don't do anything.

I hope you'll join me for my upcoming Yin Yoga series starting this Thursday. I share 3 classes over 3 weeks. These 45-minute classes are a potent way to release the doing of the day and prepare yourself for deep, calm rest. You can practice live or with the recording. Learn more at the link in bio.

Do you sometimes feel the need to do-do-do? How do you take time to rest and relax? Let me know in the comments <3

Thank you for being here. 🙏 Sharing the profou Thank you for being here. 🙏

Sharing the profound teachings of Yoga and Āyurveda are my soul purpose - something I've dreamed of doing since I was 18, and that for many years, I didn't think was possible.

I have seen these teachings help change lives - from helping reverse chronic health issues to prompting career changes, from releasing relationships that no longer serve to finding true, deep love.

It's my goal to foster an inclusive, supportive environment for you to explore, experiment, and apply these teachings in your life, in a way that works for you. And when you all experience that -- I'm filled with joy and gratitude.

These are some notes from yesterday's Chakra Healing Workshop. As I shared there - the more I study and teach, the more I fall in love with this material, and feel even more strongly about living it and sharing it.

Thank you for being part of Spiro Collective, and I'm excited to continue sharing the powerful systems of Yoga and Āyurveda with you.

There are 2 Yoga series starting in the next week!
-Thursday night Yin Yoga - a 3-class series exploring the elements of water, fire, and air.
-Monday AM Wake Up and Flow Yoga - a 3-class series to support self-love.

Crazy, but true... 10 years ago, I heard Eckhart Crazy, but true...

10 years ago, I heard Eckhart Tolle talk about how much he enjoys driving. I laughed- my road rage was pretty uncontrollable, and I was filled with stress anytime I drove.

The secret to his enjoyment? Just driving. Not listening to music, or catching up on the phone, or listening to the news. Just driving.

I decided to give it a try...and I was sold pretty immediately. Not only did my stress levels go way down, I also realized I was a BETTER, FASTER driver as a result.

It turns out that all that fiddling with the radio dial or thinking about what I was listening to was taking a lot of my time and attention.

Now, I pretty much exclusively choose silence when driving, and I believe my life is the better for it.

Driving while listening to music/news/phone is another sneaky way we've built multitasking into our day. And unfortunately, there are consequences to this near-constant distraction.

Particularly if you're having focus issues, forgetfulness, anxious feelings, or high vata dosha, finding ways to reduce multitasking can have a huge effect on increasing your wellbeing.

Let's hear from you-- do you think you'd benefit from mindful driving??

Cooking nuts 😀 Peep in the bottom left corner Cooking nuts 😀

Peep in the bottom left corner of this photo and you'll catch sight of a beautiful walnut that made its way into a recent dinner.

Nuts are delicious and nutritious, but *how* you eat them matters.

I used to pound handfuls of raw almonds every day 🤦‍♀️...and had constipation and indigestion to prove it.

👉Nuts are heavy and difficult to digest. And in Āyurveda, nuts have a pungent vipaka or post-digestive effect. That means that they have a constricting and drying quality within the colon.

That's why these days, I primarily eat nuts that are cooked into meals. 👍The cooking softens and hydrates the nut, making it easier to chew and easier to digest. And this method  - tossing 1-2 tbsp of nuts per serving into the pan when you're cooking grains or veggies - makes it easier to not overeat the nuts and give yourself a stomach ache.

If you're someone that eats lots of raw nuts and seeds, try skipping it for a few days and instead cooking nuts into your food. I guarantee you'll notice a difference in how you feel after eating.

For more strategies on Āyurvedic cooking and eating, check out my Āyurvedic Fundamentals: Food guide linked in my bio!

You don't need to "believe" in Yoga or Āyurveda. You don't need to "believe" in Yoga or Āyurveda.

There is no need. Instead, we're invited to actually take action, to do the practices, and then experience these benefits for ourselves. There's no belief. It's pure knowing.

When we do a specific Yoga pose, change a type of food we're eating, or try a new breathing practice, we directly notice the change in our bodies and minds, and we get to see the power of these practices for ourselves.

I was reminded of this just last week when I taught our simple, 30-minute Wake Up and Flow Yoga class last week. I wasn't expecting it to be life-changing. But as we cruised into savasana (the laying down, sleep-like pose we do to end the practice), I remembered why this practice is so beneficial. I could literally feel how my energy was moving differently.

My breath was more even.
My shoulders a little lower.
My hips a little happier.
My spine a little taller.
My mind a little clearer.
I had shifted from some of the "blah" New Year feelings I had to feeling presence and excitement. And it set a tone for such great energy throughout the day.

This may seem like an exaggeration -- just 30 minutes affecting my whole day -- but I promise you it wasn't. And that's why I don't need to "believe". Because I already know.

On January 22, I'm sharing a virtual Chakra Healing Workshop. This workshop introduces the main energetic centers found in the body, as well as how you can experience and shift the energy in each one. By bringing awareness to the chakras, we can make sense of physical symptoms, understand emotional patterns, and ultimately create healing throughout our body and mind. It's a powerful and rejuvenating experience that has lasting effects. Don't take my word for it -- join us! Link in bio or spirocollective.com/event-calendar.
