Want a summertime tea to make your heart sing? 🍵

In the summer heat, those of us with too much pitta dosha might feel a little rigid or controlling. This tea is designed to help soften the heart, cool the body, and remind you to be flexible and free this July.

One half tsp rose petals
One half tsp fresh or dried mint leaves
2 cardamom pods
2 cups water

1️⃣Bring water to a boil, add the rose, mint, and cardamom, and boil for 1 minute. Turn off the heat and let cool.

2️⃣Drink on its own or with a ½ tsp maple syrup.

Cooling the heat is this month’s theme in Spiro Commons, my group wellness program. Check out the link in my bio to get access to Yoga and Āyurvedic practices, mindfulness exercises, and more.

Do you have a favorite summer tea? Let me know below 😋
Celebrating 4 years of marriage this week 🤯😍 Celebrating 4 years of marriage this week 🤯😍🙌

Life is a little crazy with a toddler and work and life, so we celebrated with a bike ride adventure on a beautiful day to explore a new coffee shop. It was simple, and also so perfect.

There's so much I could say about these wonderful and crazy and fun and hard 4 years, but I'll keep it simple:

Shaun- thank you for being willing to have the hard conversations with me. Thank you for being open to changing course when we realize something isn't working. And for reflecting with me on our goals, needs, and feeling. Ultimately, I feel it's this willingness to speak up and pivot when things aren't working that has kept us going stronger than ever through some of the most difficult decisions and situations we've faced. I love you.

❤️❤️

Yes – soup can be cooling! 🍵 Summer is here, Yes – soup can be cooling! 🍵

Summer is here, and the heat is on! I commonly get asked about how to adjust your diet in the summer. Āyurvedic meals are primarily cooked foods, which isn’t what we necessarily think of as the perfect summer fare. 🤨

But cooked foods can still be cooling! In Āyurveda, “hot” isn’t just about the temperature.

Some raw foods can be heating (🌶) while some cooked foods can be cooling (🥒).

So to determine if a food is “hot,” we also look to the qualities of heat in the taste of the food and its post-digestive effects. The different qualities (called the gurvadi gunas) can also impact whether foods feel balancing or imbalancing during the summer.

So I still recommend eating primarily cooked foods during the summer. Instead of going raw, begin to favor more cooling ingredients like mint, fennel, parsley, coconut, and organic milk.

Be sure to stick with the balance bowl formula and include whole grains and water-rich foods and vegetables on your plate.

Remember your balance bowl can be split up like this:

🥬 20% Extractive Vegetable
Spinach, kale, chad, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts

🍠 30% Augmenting Vegetable
Sweet potato, beets, squash, etc.

🍳 20% Extractive Proteins
Mung beans, lentils, black-eyed peas, split peas, adzuki bean, meat, aged cheese, eggs

🍞 30% Augmenting Grains and Flours
Rice, barley, flatbread, soba noodles, fresh noodles, fresh cheese.

The beauty of Āyurveda is how we can pivot depending on the weather and our personal needs while still following the basic formulas.

The Summer Solstice is today, and on that day, we The Summer Solstice is today, and on that day, we celebrate the sun, surya, knowing that a celebration of the sun is a celebration of our Self. ☀️

The greatest gift I’ve gotten from yogic philosophy is the teaching of basic goodness.

In Sāmkhya, the underlying philosophy of Yoga and Āyurveda, humans are not separate from nature. Instead, each one of us is a necessary and unique piece of energy in the universe. We are made of stardust. 💫

🌷We have the same capacity for peace as a flower.
🌅We have the same capacity for beauty as a sunrise.
🕊We have the same capacity for joy as a singing bird.

There is nothing to fix. We humans aren’t broken. Instead, we use practices like meditation, prānayama (breathing exercises), and asana as a means to remove the veils that keep us from knowing our true Self and our true nature.

It is a gift to move through life with a belief in our inherent goodness.

Many of us set New Year’s Resolutions, but I like to set a Solstice Celebration! A Solstice Celebration is one thing about yourself that you’d like to acknowledge and celebrate. It might be something you are innately talented at or something you rarely give credit to.

I want to hear from you. What's something you'd like to celebrate about your Self this solstice? Share your Solstice Celebration in a comment below (no modesty required).

As for me, I’d like to celebrate my immense capacity for care. My deep caring drives my desire for connection, which keeps me curious and engaged with my clients and the world around me. At times it can be a little scary to feel so much. AND I know that my care is a divine part of my humanity. ✨

I’m not here to convince you that pizza made wit I’m not here to convince you that pizza made without garlic and tomato is going to taste EXACTLY like your favorite slice. 🍕

But, I CAN say that it’s wonderfully delicious in its own right and doesn’t have the same imbalancing effects.

True story: when we stopped eating garlic and onions, my husband started sleeping deeply and didn’t have digestive issues after eating. When we cut tomatoes and garlic out of my son’s diet, his eczema cleared up.

Garlic, onion, and nightshades like tomatoes can create heat and irritation within the digestive system, overactivity in the mind, and can make it hard to discern other tastes (which makes you get addicted to stronger and stronger flavors). 🍅

It’s been a journey to remove garlic, onion, and tomatoes from our diet, but it’s a change that’s been so positive for my family. We have no intention of going back.

Would you ever try a garlic-free day or week?

For a long time, coaching was the last thing I wan For a long time, coaching was the last thing I wanted to do.

I dealt with menstrual cycle and digestive issues throughout high school and college. Over those years, I saw a BUNCH of practitioners, and so many of them left me with an icky feeling.

I would have this sense that they weren’t really listening to me. They were just taking my list of symptoms and offering a laundry list of suggestions that weren't relevant or feasible. (Give me a 🙌🙌 if you've been there too.)

I knew that I didn’t want to just tell people what to do. I have no interest in pushing my agenda instead of listening to what my clients have to tell me about their lives and circumstances.

👉I decided to create a coaching practice that was in alignment with these values. And now, I see my primary job as listening.

The first thing I do with clients is get a clear sense of what you’re already doing so that I don’t try to change things that are working. When I give recommendations, we talk about how this does or doesn’t fit into your life (logistically and emotionally).

My goal is that you walk out of our session 90% certain that you could incorporate all of the changes we’ve discussed. ✨

I share this with you because I’ve been in your shoes. 👟I know how disappointing it feels to seek support and relief and end up feeling unseen and unheard.

There is a different way.

👉Āyurveda asks us to look at the whole person, not just a list of symptoms. And I know that the only strategies that will solve your issues are the ones you can actually implement.

If you're interested in experiencing coaching and support with someone who sees you as whole and complete, and as more than your list of symptoms, consider coaching with me. ✨

Join me in an Āyurvedic consultations and learn how to make sense of your symptoms and finally get relief.

If you want to be *heard* and truly supported in achieving your goals, learn more at the link in my bio. ✨

Looking for a cooling recipe for summer?

“Hot” isn’t just about temperature in Āyurveda.

Raw food like a chile pepper can be warming, and cooked foods like cucumber soup can be cooling.

In the summertime, I recommend eating cooling foods like this delightful mint pesto.

You’ll need:
● ¼ cup sunflower seeds
● ¼ tsp salt
● Juice from ½ of a lemon or lime
● 3-4 tbsp olive oil
● 1 cup mixed greens (kale, spinach, parsley, basil)
● ¼ cup fresh mint

Here’s how to make it…

1. Blend sunflower seeds, salt, lemon or lime juice, and olive oil until smooth.
2. You can proceed to the next step right away, or for an even better flavor, let the mixture sit for 30 min-2 hours.
3. Add your mixed greens and fresh mint to the blender and blend.
4. If needed, add water (1-2tbsp at a time) to get the desired consistency.

I like to serve this on top of rice or pasta, as a pizza sauce, or as a dip for pita and veggies.

Who wants to try this recipe tonight? 🙋‍♀️
