A kale smoothie that will make your heart sing

green smoothie recipe photoAre you ready to defeat your afternoon energy slump? Look no further — I recently incorporated green smoothies into my afternoon routine (read all about it here), and I will never look back.

My afternoon smoothie provides me with a burst of energy, greens, and sweetness to power me through my afternoon. So much better than reaching for a coffee or sugary snack. Those treats seem like a good idea, but they don’t provide sustained energy.

This is my favorite go-to smoothie: it features kale for greeny goodness, carrots to add extra body and creaminess, and strawberry banana for a boost of sweetness.

The only ingredient you may be unfamiliar with is spirulina. Spirulina is a blue-green algae that is sold in powdered form. It has a higher concentration of protein than meat, is filled with micronutrients like calcium, iron, and niacin, and gives you a boost of chlorophyll.

For the purposes of this smoothie – spirulina provides some saltiness and boost of green without adding more fibrous kale stalks. It’s optional to include, but I highly recommend! Nutrex Hawaii is my go-to brand of spirulina.

Like most smoothie recipes, substitutions work great! Feel free to substitute veggies and fruit based on your preferences or to add ginger or cinnamon. The most important part of this recipe is to blend it for enough time – really give it a minute or two so the texture is smooth.

Get ready to feel radiant.
